Your attitude. Most modem school buildings have every known safety feature built into them. Still, accidents can and do happen to students while they are engaged in school activities. Many of these accidents are due to carelessness or thoughtlessness on the pan of the students. Running in the halls and pushing or tripping others have no place in a school building or on the school grounds.
A good many school accidents can be avoided if everyone shows regard for the other fellow.
Making athletics safe. Many of the accidents that happen in schools occur in the gymnasium, in shower and locker rooms, in swimming pools, or on the athletic fields. This is partly because of the large number of students who take part in physical activity. It is also due to the nature of the activities themselves. This does not mean that we should give up these activities. We should, however, stress skill in playing games, respect for the rules, and good sportsmanship, for giving attention to these three things will help prevent accidents. Cheating is not only a mark of poor sportsmanship, but of thoughtlessness as well, and it may lead to accidents.
Playing without proper equipment or when improperly supervised can also lead to accidents. But the one most important cause of injury in sports is poor physical condition. This, of course, includes failing to warm up properly before strenuous exercise.
Safety in the shop and laboratory. Most accidents in the shop are due to lack of skill in the use of power machinery and hand tools. Consult your instructor and learn how to use the equipment safely. Proper clothing in the shops is just as important as proper equipment on the athletic field. Loose, sloppy clothing is apt to become entangled in moving parts of machinery. Rings, bracelets, and wrist watches may be caught in machines. Goggles should be worn when necessary to protect the eyes from flames, bright lights, flying particles, etc.
Science laboratories may be the scene of accidents if chemicals and equipment are not handled properly. Know what you are doing, or ask the teacher Eor help on experiments that involve acids andgases.
